Then I was able to install Freenas to the USB flash drive. The program can also ensure data integrity through various checks. I had to launch a VM with the ISO file as a virtual CDROM drive and do some creative USB drive driver manipulation to get my USB flash drive to show as a disk in the VM.
Originally when I attempted this a couple years ago, it was still Freenas and booting the computer from the Freenas installation USB flash drive and trying to install to a second USB flash drive would hang my computers during the installation process. I booted my laptop from the second USB flash drive and it booted in Truenas. It wrote Truenas to the second USB flash drive. I picked the second flash drive to install to and there was also a choice for UEFI or Legacy BIOS (MBR). Then I selected the option to install Truenas. Once booted into Truenas installation, I inserted a second USB flash drive and watched as it was detected.
The flash drive would boot in either legacy BIOS mode or UEFI. I used Rufus to create the flash drive from the ISO file. I downloaded the newest version of Rufus portable.
